When making a call to outsource or not, you need to take into account these benefits of outsourcing your PMO functions.
Some risks can be mitigated by contracting out your PMO or some of its functions to an external PMO like KMV Consulting. Finding the right talent to staff your PMO can be difficult – it can take time to find the right skills and training.
With an external and outsourced PMO providing unbiased data and reporting, projects can concentrate on their tasks. There will still be documentation to complete and records to manage, but you'll be discussing some of their superfluous activities, such as budget reporting.
When the PMO functions are external, tasks will be more clearly defined – job roles will not begin to overlap as they might in an internal project office. Furthermore, as part of the framework they support, the experts in the outside PMO will bring in strong processes and clear documentation. It will enable projects to follow a well-defined and tested path to completion, with improved processes and practices.
